Reflections: Journey through Migration

Moving ahead with intention
This is based on one of the ahādith that we’ve covered from the Riyad as-Salihin, in which it beautifully expresses that our actions are judged by our intentions, also mentioning the one whose migration is to Allah (SWT) and His Messenger (SAW) as opposed to the one whose migration is for some worldly attainment.
Before having stepped into an Islamic setting, I formed part of an environment where you focused on resolutions consisting of both long- and short-term goals, all in relation to the attainment of worldly achievements – because that’s what success is all about, right? If that’s what success is all about, why do I feel like I’m lacking something? There’s definitely something missing, something indescribable, something from within…
Fast forward to the year 2020 – this is where the process of migration comes in. It’s been a bit of a bumpy ride until now but throughout this journey, with the change that’s taken place in my life, be it how big or small, it certainly had an impact. It began with something as simple as an intention, which, honestly speaking, was a concept I quite struggled with but within time, it became easier to apply.

Consistency in the little things
Relating to the hadith, it became evident that once you put your mind to something, one should do so by joining it with an intention. At times the goal may seem far-fetched, but if the objective of reaching it is notable then we shouldn’t hold back. What has been working for me is the lesson of starting small and maintaining consistency in doing those small acts which, in the process, contributed to my personal migration to Allah (SWT) and the love for His Messenger (SAW) – (the missing piece to my puzzle). Alhamdulillah. It’s inevitable to fall off the wagon at times but with the assistance of the correct tools – to mention a few: reminders, reflection, gratitude and repentance – we should be able to get back up and move ahead.
The concept of consistency is one that can be applied to all aspects in life – pair it with sincere intention, subsequently, you’ll find yourself on the journey of migration. “Be faithful in small things because it is in them that your strength lies” – Mother Teresa.
